Emma Perry, Clinical Systems/Utilisation Management Lead
Today we hear from Emma Perry, our Utilisation Management Lead, and what brought her to Simplify Health. Find out more about Utilisation Management by reading our handy guide: here.
1. What made you want to work differently as a clinician?
I chose to specialise in mental health nursing because I was struck by the impact that mental illness can have on a person’s life. I have been a registered mental health nurse for almost fifteen years and have worked in a range of community mental health services for adults, children and young people. Since 2014, I have performed a Health Advisor role on secondment to Clinical Commissioning Groups for young people who require specialist care and joint funding (tripartite funded placements).
My passion to work with people with mental health problems, make a real difference to their lives, and stamp out stigma and inequality remains as strong as it did when I first qualified. However, the belief that I could achieve this was undermined by blocks to accessing the resources needed to help people. I began to realise that in order to help people to recover I needed to use my nursing skills and experience differently.
2. How did you make the change?
I then read the Simplify Health job advert for Clinical Systems Lead (Utilisation Management) and found out more about Simplify Health, including the history of the company. The Simplify Health Values captured my attention immediately as they matched my own: Integrity, Dignity, Community, Resiliency, Ingenuity and Advocacy. The job role and principles of ‘managed care’ offered me a new way of working. They showed a way to transform the delivery of mental health services in the UK and had an evidence base behind the vision. I also realised that the role would provide me with a new professional challenge and the opportunity for rapid development.
3. What’s next?
I was fortunate enough to be successful in my application to the post and am excited and optimistic each day that I come to work about the potential that my work with Simplify Health has in transforming the delivery of mental health services. We are making a real difference to people’s lives.
At the moment, we are looking for like-minded skilled clinicians with aligned values to join our team.
